Compressed Bio-Gas will be a game-changer not only for the energy sector but also for the agriculture sector

We are catering to the economic activity of the farmers; energy security and controlling pollution and, cleaning the environment via Compressed Bio Gas. Compressed Bio-Gas needs to come vehicles which can run like tractors, four vehicles and other heavy vehicles, mentioned Shri Tarun Kapoor, Hon'ble Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in virtual conclave organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) on India's Sustainable Energy Transition- Accelerating Compressed Bio-Gas as the next Affordable Green Fuel".

Shri Tarun Kapoor mentioned that Compressed Bio-Gas will be a game-changer not only for the energy sector but also for the agriculture sector. We are looking at agriculture residue and giving value to farmers. We are looking at useful solid waste and thereby cleaning up the urban area. We are looking at absorbing parali to reduce pollution.

He explained that according to the ministry, our target is to set up plants with high capacity MMT with high Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) production. If we blend this with natural gas, we hope that we can further increase the blending of natural gas with Compressed Bio Gas.

Talking about challenges, he discussed some of the challenges that included increase the speed of running of plants in the next few years; land acquisition, and financial closure. He mentioned that there is a lot of investment opportunities for the industry in the setting up of plants.

While discussing the opportunities, Mr. Kapoor opined that the ministry is encouraging startups in the area of biofertilizers which will add value to the plants. The ministry is trying to get tax concessions, easy movement of fertilizers, and other subsidies.

Mr. A.K Jana, Managing Director, Indraprastha Gas Limited discussed the various initiatives undertaken by the government to increase the energy basket and production of Compressed Bio Gas. He also discussed the involvement of private players which will help to boost production and demand.

Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, President, PHDCCI in his presidential address deliberated about the importance of biogas that can be produced and consumed without any adverse effect on the environment. Biogas has the potential to cater to the needs of every sector at the same time it's an organic fertilizer and helps in reducing carbon emission.

He apprised that the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt of India has embarked on series of initiatives to ensure energy justice for all Indians, energy affordability, sustainability, efficiency, security, and for progressively moving towards a marketing and pricing freedom regime in the country. SATAT scheme holds great promise for efficient municipal solid waste management and in tackling the problem of polluted urban air due to farm stubble-burning and carbon emissions. The use of Compressed Bio-Gas will also help bring down dependency on crude oil imports and in realizing the Hon'ble Prime Minister's vision of enhancing farmers' income, rural employment, and entrepreneurship.

He emphasized that the production and use of biogas-methane-from organic waste are important for saving in economic terms, keeping the environment clean, and minimizing the effects of climate change by generating cleaner green energy that makes a pollution-free atmosphere and thereby reducing the GHG emission. Biogas technology is reviewed as a promising sustainable solution for the agriculture, rural, industrial, and automobile sector.

Mr. E.S Ranganathan, Chair, PHDCCI Hydrocarbon Committee in his theme address discussed the importance of natural gas and Compressed Bio-Gas mentioned that strong policies, technologies upgrading are needed for moving India towards clean energy and making it self-reliant.

Mr. V.K Mishra, Co-Chairman, Hydrocarbon Committee PHDCCI mentioned the country needs to increase its energy growth consumption at the same time look for green and sustainable fuel which will reduce the carbon footprint. Compressed Bio-Gas will help to reduce carbon emission as it's aligned with Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan and Self-Reliant India contributing to the rural economy and generating employment.

Lt. Col Monish Ahuja (Retd), Managing Director, PRESPL mentioned that clean and green energy will be the sustainable form of energy going ahead. He discussed the shift of India towards clean and energy in the future which will help to reduce carbon fossil fuels. He mentioned that we need to move towards carbon-neutral solutions, fossil fuels replacement, and reduce the cost of fossil fuels to increase its access.

The conclave was followed by a panel discussion India's Roadmap towards Sustainable production of Clean Fuel in which Lt. Col Monish Ahuja (Retd), Managing Director, PRESPL; Mr. Bijay Kumar, GM (AE), Corporate Office- Business Development- Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Dr Rimika Kapoor Indian Institute of Technology Delhi deliberated upon the need to boost the availability of affordable and clean transport fuel to meet the demand for residential, industrial & transportation sector. They also discussed the gas production target in India, Investment Opportunities, and the need for Technology Intervention for Innovation and development of eco-friendly technologies.

Mr. Pawan Tibrawala, Co-Chairman, Hydrocarbon Committee PHDCCI while proposing a formal vote of thanks to all the delegates and participants assured that PHDCCI will closely work with the government and stakeholders towards a better India.

The conclave was moderated by Ms. Bhavna Singh, Joint Secretary, PHDCCI, and was attended by many industry stalwarts across the nation. PHDCCI's conclave was Sponsored by IGL & GAIL India & was supported by DLF India; Multani Pharmaceuticals; UFLEX; JK Tyre & Industries; Marble City; Paramount Cables; SMC Investments and Advisors; Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic; Comtech Interio; DCM Shriram Industries; Radico Khaitan; R E ROGERS INDIA PVGT LTD; Ajit Industries; Synergy Environics; Timberworkz; Jindal Stainless; P S Bedi & Co; and IFFCO.
