Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship can unlock new avenues for India in the region: says H.E. Dato’ Muzafar Shah bin Mustafa, High Commissioner of Malaysia to India
In today’s complex global environment, it is very important for both countries to collaborate in strengthening our global supply chain for sustainable growth. As Malaysia is the Chair of ASEAN this year, it will definitely open new avenues between India and the entire ASEAN region, said H.E. In 2024, Malaysia showed significant economic growth of USD 18.25 billion. Malaysia’s top export to India is palm oil, while petroleum products are exported from India to Malaysia. There is a USD 2.87 million investment from India in Malaysia, informed His Excellency.
He further added, a key sector for both industries is electrical and electronics, which is vital to the modern economy. Secondly, technology and digital innovation that offer vast potential as India’s prowess in software and digital solutions can promote an enhanced the country’s digital economy. And further significant area of growth is data centers, where Malaysia have received ample investment from leading global giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and others.
Healthcare and biotechnology is also an important sector where India’s expertise in medicine and Malaysia’s strength in medical tourism can create strong medical synergies. Tourism and hospitality remain important as well, with Malaysia extending visa services for Indian travellers.
Further, Renewable energy is another promising area, as both countries are committed to clean energy goals and can create significant avenues for collaboration. In 2023, Malaysia launched the National Energy Transition Roadmap with an ambitious target of achieving a 70% contribution from renewable energy by 2050.
Other areas include skill development, training, and education, we strongly encourage Indian industry to explore these opportunities. With Malaysia’s diverse culture, Indian companies can benefit from both the Malaysian market and the wider ASEAN region. This relationship is extremely promising, and I urge Indian counterparts to actively explore a stronger and more dynamic economic partnership and work with Malaysian businesses to realise its full potential, concluded the High Commissioner.
