TELECOM SECTOR NEEDS STANDARDIZATION. INDUSTRY SHOULD NOT SHY AWAY FROM INVESTING ITS TIME & RESOURCES TO EVOLVE STANDARDS: ANSHU PRAKASH

Additional Secretary (T), DoT, Ministry of Communications, Mr Anshu Prakash on Friday asked telecom industry as a whole to not to shy away in investing its time and resources to develop standards for the industry for its overall growth and expansion.

Speaking during the Celebration of 50 Years of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-19): Bridging the Standardisation Gap jointly under aegis of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) and Broadband India Forum (BIF) here today, Mr Prakash also felt that institutional mechanism also needs to be developed to evolve standards for telecom sector.

In view of the criticality and growth including expansion of telecom industry, developing standards is crucial and though TCIL is there to facilitate the job what is also required is that leading IITs, regional engineering colleges and other similar institutions should also get together and jointly work on the stated objective, pointed out Mr Prakash.

He called upon India Inc. to use all its resource base including time and come forward and help the government to evolving standards so that new set of benchmarks are established based on which further growth and expansion of the industry is built on.

Senior Vice President, PHDCCI, Mr D K Aggrarwal in his address said, “the Indian telecom sector has emerged as one of the critical components of economic growth required for overall socio-economic development of the country. The development of the telecom sector of India has experienced a major process of transformation in terms of its growth, technological content and market structure in the last decade through policy reforms introduced by the government. The sector has undergone a dramatic transformation from the government monopoly to a competitive environment after liberalization, where multiple private players could enter and started giving services to customers”.

According to Vice President, PHDCCI, Mr Sanjay Aggarwal, infrastructural development of the country also plays an important role in the development of telecom sector of India. “The Government of India is providing certain benefits especially to infrastructure companies and also encouraging the private players to participate through investment in this sector. Government has adopted various measures for the spreading out of mobile network in distant rural areas. Private telecom service providers are also trying very hard for the expansion of rural tele-density by providing good services in those remote areas”, he added.

Chair, Telecom Committee, PHDCCI, Mr Sandeep Aggarwal was also present on the occasion and supported the view that a fresh set of standardization is necessary so that the consolidation in the sector is achieved as per aspirations of government and industry. He also praised the initiative of the present government to spur up Make-in-India especially with reference to telecom sector. India, according to him should emulate the leading economies in terms of developing standards such as Japan, US, Europe and the like.

Among others who were also present on the occasion comprised President, BIF, Mr T V Ramachandran; Director General, BIF, Mr Anil Prakash; Former Secretary, DoT, Mr M F Farooqui; Secretary General, ITU, Mr Houlin Zhao; CMD, TCIL, Mr A Seshagiri Rao and Principal Director, PHDCCI, Mr Yogesh Srivastav.
