MSME Official Exhorts PHD Chamber To Take “Her Enterprise हर दिन” Initiative to India’s Small Towns and Cities

New Delhi: The government is making all efforts to ensure that the number of female entrepreneurs goes up in the country and they help in increasing the GDP rate of the country. This was stated by Ms Mercy Epao, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises at the inaugural session of “Her Enterprise हर दिन” in New Delhi on Tuesday, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This is a series of seminars started by the Women & Child Development and Entrepreneurship Committee of the chamber. The aim of this series is to strengthen women entrepreneurship by showcasing success stories and creating new opportunities of business for them.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Saurabh Sanyal, Secretary General of PHD Chamber said, “We want more women to take ideas from here and go back home with a new perspective on their lives – what they can make of it.” Only 7 percent of working age women in India have paid jobs, as per a report in The Economist. Yet, only seven out of 100 entrepreneurs in India are women and of them nearly half at 49.9 percent get into business out of necessity rather than aspiration, according to a 2020 report of the Initiative for What Works to Advance Women and Girls in the Economy, a gender research and advocacy organisation.

There are several reasons why Indian women remain poorly represented in businesses. Access to finance, absence of exposure to viable entrepreneurial options, poor linkages with market, weak support networks and restricted mobility are just some of them.

Ms Alka Gurnani, Co-Chair of the Direct Selling Committee, which was a co-organiser of the seminar, shared that there were many ways through which women could become self-employed and direct selling was one very good option. In this, without any investment, just by dedicating some time, one could become an entrepreneur.

The seminar featured women entrepreneurs from a diverse range – from high-end couture to luxury wedding planners, communications advisors to export-import experts and health food enthusiasts. The galaxy of speakers included Ms Shabnam Singhal, Managing Partner at Sirius; Ms Vertica Dvivedi, Director at Big Sea Marcom; Ms Pallavi Upadhyaya, Co-Founder & Managing Director of Millets for Health; Ms Sonal Jindal, Founder of Medusa Exim and haute couturier Ms Bhawana Rao.

The second technical session was on Trends in Women Healthcare Business where the panellists discussed women as decision-makers that healthcare companies need to pay attention to, closing research gaps and destigmatizing female biology. Speakers included Dr. Sabine Kapasi, Gynecologist & Global Strategy Lead at United Nations Emergency Response; Dr. Loveleena Nadir, MS (O&C) and top distributor of Herbalife products; Dr. Sonia Lal Gupta, Neurologist, Metro Hospital; Ms. Tammena Singh, Founder & MD, Uberlux Group of Companies and Ms. Surbhi Gupta, Director, PlusPlus Life Sciences.
