Title: Ecosystem Restoration will help us improve the productivity & capacity of ecosystems to meet the needs of the society mentioned Dr Karen Landmark, Director- Business Development & Strategy, Greenstat and Chair of the Board, Greenstat Asia in a Webinar on Ecosystem Restoration organized by the Environment Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the occasion of World Environment Day 2021 on 5th June 2021.
Dr Karen Landmark in her address mentioned that an area larger than Denmark is lost every year and over half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared in the last century. Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks like forests and peatlands, at a time humanity can least afford it, said Dr Karen.
Ecosystem restoration has to be undertaken at a massive scale globally which means repairing billions of hectares of land, an area greater than China or the USA. She emphasized on the need to Act urgently since the next 10 years are important in bending the curve on biodiversity loss. Dr Karen Landmark said that Restoration of Ecosystems is important from business point of view since for every dollar invested in restoration, at least seven to thirty dollars in return for society can be expected. Lastly, she said that Businesses cannot succeed in a society that fails to protect environment.
Mr. Sanjay Aggarwal, President, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in his welcome address highlighted that Ecological Restoration in areas of environmental degradation will not only help us reverse global biodiversity losses but also promote recovery of ecosystem services. The goal should be revival of economies while aligning pro-nature growth outlook in line with Sustainable Development Goals and upcoming global framework on biodiversity. There is a necessity for synchronized, unified, computable, sector-specific and multi-lateral action in the coming years if we have to achieve our global economic powerhouse targets, said Mr. Aggarwal.
Dr J P Gupta, Chair, Environment Committee, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry while introducing Dr Karen Landmark congratulated everyone one on the occasion of World Environment Day. He said that Environment and Life, both, are interrelated where one without the other cannot exist. He also talked about the deep routed Indian Philosophical thought. Humans are not supposed to exploit the environment and a Balance has to be maintained in nature. The Five Elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space are available in abundance for all, but it is up to us to not exploit it, said Dr Gupta.
Mr. Mahendra Rustagi, Co-chair, Environment Committee, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry gave the Concluding remarks to all the esteemed panelists, participants and summarized the session.
