SUBMIT REFINING & PETROCHEMICALS PROJECTS FOR ENVIRONMENT CLEARANCES WITH DUE CARE AND DETAILING, SAYS MEMBER, EXPERT APPRAISAL COMMITTEE AT PHDCCI

Member, Expert Appraisal Committee, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr J S Sharma on Thursday advised Refining and petrochemicals industry to submit their project reports for environmental clearances, taking due care of environmental and ecological sensitivities to Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

He also advised the industry to make feasible study of projects relating to refining and petrochemicals in such a manner so that the issue of risk management and corporate social responsibilities are adequately addressed with solutions around which such green field projects are proposed to be set up.

Addressing a National Refining & Petrochemicals Conclave under aegis of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) here today, Dr Sharma reminded that India has certain commitment towards climate change, environmental and ecological front to multilateral institutions for drastic reductions of carbon emissions and accordingly clearances are considered by the Expert Appraisal Committee to all upcoming projects including those in refining and petrochemicals areas.

Therefore, utmost precautions should be observed and detailed prescriptions should be provided to the authorities before seeking environmental and ecological clearances, he pointed out.

Executive Director (Corp. Affairs/RM) & OSD, Gail India Ltd, Mr Rajeev Mathur who is also Chair, Energy Committee of the Chamber in his remarks hinted for a roadmap and a policy mechanism for upcoming and proposed refining and petrochemicals projects so that their take off becomes smoother.

He argued that the refining and petrochemicals sector is growing at a CAGR of +8% which is higher than the average GDP growth of the country and therefore, it becomes even more critical and sensible that suitable and proactive policies are put in place to make sure that India becomes a refining and petrochemicals hub in Asia sooner than anticipated.

Among others who were also present on the occasion comprised Director, Centre for High Technology, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Raman Pucha who emphasized that the prospects of ethanol fed industries should be optimized whereas Co-Chair, Hydrocarbons Committee, PHDCCI, Mr Sarthak Behuria pointed out that energy sector since is the engine of growth, it should be nurtured with proactive policies. Principal Director, PHDCCI, Dr Ranjeet Mehta presided over the Conclave saying that its concluding recommendations would be submitted to the Government.
