In War More is Lost Than Gained said Lt. Gen. Philip Campose, PVSM, AVSM & Bar, VSM (Retd.)Former Vice Chief of Indian Army

Lecture by Lt. Gen. Philip Campose PVSM, AVSM & Bar, VSM (Retd Former Vice Chief of Indian Army addressed the members of PHDCCI on “Russia – Ukraine Conflict and its Implications on India” at the PHD House New Delhi, Today.

Lt. Gen. Philip Campose, PVSM, AVSM & Bar, VSM (Retd.)Former Vice Chief of Indian Army, shared his insightful views on Russia- Ukraine conflict and talked about the profound effects of war on the nations. According to him this attack by Russia on Ukraine is a classic example of strategic overreach. This attack is clearly going to have far reaching implications on the economy of the globe. He also provided brief view about the Ukraine demography and economy and why it became the host for invasion by Russia. Lt. Gen. Campose mentioned that the implications of the war can be directly felt on the economy as commodities price soar up including oil, agriculture products like wheat, barley and fertilizers, among others. The most affected sector being the energy sector, majorly oil and natural gas, due to supply chain disruptions. It is posing a major concern for Indian economy as well, due to the current rising inflationary trends and it’s ripple effects in the long run. Moreover, it is not only the economy of the nations which are suffering but also the innocent people of the Ukraine who are facing the brunt of disastrous war like situation. This event is sure to have catastrophic effect and will create unsustainability in the whole world added Lt. Gen. Philip Campose.

Mr Pradeep Multani President, PHDCCI, in his address mentioned that on the diplomatic front India has to tread a fine line in this imbroglio. The Government has to balance its response without damaging its relationship with the US and Russia, with both of whom it has close ties. This crisis may also allow China an opportunity to act even more aggressively against us, Taiwan and the QUAD; much like the manner in which it got away by attacking us in 1962 while the US and the Soviet Union were focused on the Cuban Missile Crisis. As you are aware, Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe, behind Russia, by area, and in terms of population the eighth largest with its 42 million inhabitants. It has been independent since 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, though it had been a part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union since the 18th century. Although Russia has invaded Ukraine but such invasions are relatively easy to accomplish, but keeping restive and hostile populations under control is a wholly different proposition. The world as also India are likely to remain in a state of flux till the crisis is completed resolved said Mr Multani.

Mr Saurabh Sanyal Secretary General, PHDCCI, gave introductory remarks for Lt. Gen. Philip Campose, PVSM, AVSM & Bar, VSM (Retd.)Former Vice Chief of Indian Army, and the session.
