The Jury

Justice Ramesh Chandra Lahoti

Chair

Justice R.C. Lahoti, the 35th Chief Justice of India is a well known and respected personality in the legal fraternity. He has a rich experience of over 40 years in the field of law and justice. He was born on 1st November 1940. After completing his studies as a Commerce Graduate, he went on to pursue LLB.

His journey to the legal fraternity started in 1960 when he was enrolled as a Pleader in District Guna. Two years later he was enrolled as an Advocate in 1962, and in April 1977, he was recruited directly from the Bar to the State Higher Judicial Service and appointed as a District & Sessions Judge, a post from which he resigned a year later to continue his practice as an Advocate in the High Court. Justice Lahoti was appointed as the Judge of Madhya Pradesh High Court on 3rd May 1988 and subsequently transferred to Delhi High Court on 7th February 1994.  He went on to be appointed as the Judge of Supreme Court of India on 9th December 1998. On 1st June 2004, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India. After serving in this role for tenure of more than a year, he demitted the office of the Chief Justice of India on 31st October 2005.

Justice Lahoti has participated in several international conferences and seminars related to law and justice. He was also a member of Fourth Indo-US Legal Forum Meet held in Washington and San Francisco in October 2002. He had participated in the Worldwide Common Law Judiciary Conference of Chief Justices in Washington, USA in 2005; the Eighth SAARCLAW Conference held in Paro, Bhutan (June 2005); and 14th Commonwealth Law Conference in London in  September 2005.

During his career span, Justice Lahoti was conferred with many significant honours like conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by Rani Durgawati Vishvavidhyalaya Jabalpur in the august presence of H.E. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India; National Law Day Award by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, (Nov 2006); ‘Goswami Tulsidas Samarohan Samman’ (Aug 2007);

degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the Vikram Vishvawidyalaya Ujjain (2008) in the august presence of H.E. Dr. Balram Jakhad, Governor of Madhya Pradesh and H.E. Sh. Naval Kishore Sharma, Governor of Gujarat; D..Lit. (Honoris Causa) by Jiwaji Vishwavidyalaya, Gwalior for his exceptional contribution and service in the field of justice dispensation(2014). He founded the Rotary Club of Gunaand remained an active Rotarian for 21 years (1973- 1994). He was appointed as Chairman, Advisory Board, Sri Aurobindo Foundation for Integral Management (SAFIM) Pondicherry, in October 2011. He is on the Advisory Board of the Indian International Model United Nations.

Since 2013, Justice Lahoti has been serving as the Chairman of National Committee for Promotion of Social and Economic Welfare, appointed by Government of India.

Mrs. Aruna Abhey Oswal

Jury

A magnetic personality, an entrepreneur, a global philanthropist, and a social activist with a will of iron and a heart of gold. Mrs. Aruna Abhey Oswal has been working tirelessly to accomplish the dreams of numerous lives that she has touched over the years.

To propagate and caress the lives of the underprivileged she has taken on a new journey through her Foundation-Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust to nurture lives and spread joy.          

Born in a simple family at Ambala, her childhood was nurtured by her beloved parents who supported her every talent of dance, music, acting and developed her confidence for all the challenges. She did her Master’s degree in English.

Arunaji Oswal a woman of substance has proved her leadership serving the community with passion and compassion and total commitment. Arunaji Oswal’s 40 years track record of service activities has set an example for many.

Aruna Oswal began her lionistic journey in 1989. Her Governorship in 2004-05 is being cherished by Lions of District 3231 A3 even today. Fellowship & Service projects touched the sky heights under her leadership. A project of distribution of 1,000 Sewing machines for Women’s Empowerment, was witnessed and appreciated by the then International President Lion Tae Sup Lee and the Leadership of India.

She has been the key person in settingup of Blood Banks, Eye Care Foundations, Community Welfare Foundations in the name of Shrimati Mohandai Oswal under the aegis of the Lions Club.  She was engaged with lions in the personalized service activities in villages/ adivasi areas, providing them with education & medical facilities. Her passion and commitment provided her leadership at club, District, Multiple & international level and at every coveted position. Looking to her dedication and involvement the Leadership of Lions Clubs International made her the National & Multi National Co-coordinator in the journey of Campaign Sight First II during which The Oswal Family joined hands with Lions Clubs International Foundation for partnership project of four Eye care Hospitals in four corners of India in the name of Shri Vidyasagar Oswal.

Aruna Abhey Oswal Trust runs its flagship Project of Mobile Medical Vans for delivering primary health services for rural population in India. The Trust scaled up the project in the neighboring countries Nepal & Bangladesh also.

Mr. Balbir Punj

Jury

Mr Balbir Punj (born 1949) is a renowned journalist and columnist from India. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On 31 March 2013, he was promoted as one of the Vice Presidents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).[1]

Mr. Punj was born in Lalowal, Gurdaspur, Punjab. He started his career in journalism for the publication Motherland in 1971. He also worked for Financial Express from 1974 to 1996. He is a close aide of RSS. He specializes in writing about the Indian Economy, he can be often seen on news channels debating issues. Balbir Punj is a respected journalist of independent India. He was also chairman of  IIMC and Youth Commission.

He has written columns in the National Hindi Daily Punjab Kesari and Indian weekly magazine Outlook. Currently he writes a regular column for the daily newspaper The Pioneer.

Mr. Pratip Chaudhuri

Jury

Mr. Pratip Chaudhuri (born 1953), a 1974 batch alumnus of University Business School – Chandigarh, is the former chairman of the State Bank of India. He took charge from O. P. Bhatt, on 7 April 2011 and retired on 30 September 2013. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of the International Division of SBI.

He joined the State Bank of India 38 years back as a probationary officer in 1974.

He has held several important positions in SBI including Chief General Manager of Chennai Circle. He is also credited with the merger of State Bank of Saurashtra in 2008, where he was a director. He served as the Chief General Manager of Chennai at State Bank of India until April 7, 2011. Mr. Chaudhuri served as a Group Executive of International Banking and Managing Director of State Bank of India and also served as Deputy Managing Director until April 1, 2011. Mr. Chaudhuri holds a Master’s Degree in Science and Statistics from the University of Rajasthan and is an Alumnus of University Business School, Chandigarh. Mr. Chaudhuri holds a bachelors degree in science from the University of Delhi and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Punjab University.

HOW TO SEND NOMINATIONS

  1. An Indian corporate / individual can apply for the award for one or more category of award.
  2. PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry holds the right to reject any application at any time with no liability to give justification.
  1. Previous recipients of awards can apply for nomination for any other category(s) other than the one in which they were awarded in the last 5 years.
  2. While screening the nominations, the applicant company’s / individual’s proactive initiatives in addressing business and society issues, outstanding contribution to social and community welfare & endeavors towards minimizing environmental footprints and economics in the design of its products and services and the management of its operations will be considered. The Nature of Business should not be socially undesirable.
  3. Awards will be decided by a three-level meticulous screening and selection procedure validated by third-party auditors and finalized by an eminent Jury chaired by the Retired Chief Justice of India and other prominent personalities.
  4. Awards will be conferred at the Annual Session of PHDCCI by the Chief Guest. Each Award includes a Citation and a Trophy. A Citations Booklet will be printed for wide circulation. Awardees will be publicized through advertisement in leading national dailies, PHDCCI website, and social media.
  5. All online and offline nominations must be accompanied by  Declaration (click here to download the FORMAT FOR DECLARATION ) and a recommendation letter (click here to download the FORMAT FOR RECOMMENDATION LETTER).
