ITS by May 2010 in Delhi : Joint Commissioner, Traffic Police at PHD Chamber
Intelligence Traffic System will be introduced in Delhi by May 2010. This was disclosed today by Mr. S N Shriivastava, Joint Commissioner, Traffic Police at an Interactive Session organised by PHD Chamber. Delhi Police in order to solve the problems of congestion, traffic accidents, inefficient logistics, etc. proposes to use state of the art ITS using a broad range of information technologies, communication based information, control and digital technologies, display technologies, etc. to achieve the objectives .Delhi Traffic Police is introducing it to have an holistic approach to solve the problem and making the traffic of Delhi smooth and safe for all categories of road users. The proposed ITS will not only add state-of-the-art systems but also integrate various existing sub systems like Area Traffic Control System, Traffic Monitoring System, Traffic Signals, Variable Message Signs, Speed Camera Systems etc.
All traffic vehicles will also be equipped with the GPS system in near future to ensure easy tracking, added Mr. Shrivastava.
The Traffic police have recently purchased 800 Tow Straps and traffic vehicles have been provided with it. This is for easy and quicker towing away of breakdown vehicles, which disrupt the traffic.
A dedicated radio channel is also required for traffic updates for road users, added Mr. Shrivastava. He also said that if a professional group enters the pick up crane service it will be a big help to ease traffic congestion.
Some suggestions which the PHD Chamber members gave like all traffic lights to have a displayed number which will facilitate reporting of any fault of the traffic signals easier, First Aid services at all petrol pumps, mothers of school kids to act as traffic warden during the school timings to mange school children flow was greatly welcomed by the Joint Commissioner.
The nation is gearing up for the Commonwealth Games, during which there is going to be a phenomenal increase in Delhi’s transport infrastructure.Delhi has around 6.5 million motorized vehicles and the pressure on roads increases because another 8-10 lakh vehicles come to Delhi from the nearby satellite towns.
Common Wealth Games are being held in October, 2010 in Delhi. In order to ensure & monitor the movement of athletes, games family etc and the City traffic, it is proposed to install the I.T.S. technologies/facilities on major roads & areas of Delhi. There are number of road events like cycling, marathon & walkathon etc. requiring close online monitoring. Athletes and games family would be provided dedicated lane to ensure hassle free moment from village near Akshardham Temple NH-24 to stadiums in Delhi, training venues, hotels & other places of tourist interest.
