Government Regulation vs Self Regulation : Smt Ambika Soni, to talk at PHD Chamber
Dissemination of information and advocacy are two very important tools for communication, especially in this modern age. Information is available on finger tips through electronic media and print media. They have always played a very important role in India’s democratic process, but the on-going debate from a long time has raised the question as who is responsible for the content of programme and news coverage.
Many a times intense competition and the need to boost revenues have led to programming that does not uphold ethics and standards. This trend especially on Entertainment Channels has opened debate in Parliament and public. The Government from time to time has toyed with the idea of government regulation. On the other hand the media feels that the proposed certification rules by the Government have measures which are not favourable to freedom of press.
A new dimension to the entire media industry comes forth when we think of relevance in the argument of threat to the freedom of press in case where the financial interest of media baron extensively conflicts with that of the public.
The outcome of this debate on Government regulation vs self regulation affects the consumer at the end of the day. Keeping the relevance of this important topic in mind, PHD Chamber has organized an interactive session with Smt. Ambika Soni, Hon’ble Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting on October 20, 2009 at PHD Chamber.
