“Only Engineered Landfill Sites for Solid Disposal in Future” Mayor Sain on World Environment Day at PHD Chamber
“Only engineered Landfill sites are to be developed for disposal of garbage in future” said Dr. Kanwar Sain, Mayor, Municipal Corporation of Delhi on the occasion of World Environment Day at a meeting at PHD Chamber. The meeting on “Solid waste Management” was organised by PHD Chamber with the support of Ministry of Environment and Forests with knowledge partners Indian Centre for Plastics in Environment.
6000 metric tonnes per day of solid waste and likely to go up to 17 000 metric tonnes per day by 2017 surely needs solid planning and strategizing to cope up with the acute problem which it might bring up. Municipal Corporation is facing the major challenge of collecting, segregating and disposing of the solid waste.
According to a study done by MCD along with UNDP, a good option for management of solid waste of Delhi is to find ways of refuse to derived fuel. According to Mayor Sain MCD is seriously working on this option.
As per a master plan study, a plant using refuse-derived fuel of 250 tons will generate around 60, 000 MW of electricity. PPP will be required to finance these projects as one such plant will cost close to 38 crores.
The MCD has three upcoming projects on reduction of waste and promotion of recycling. These three upcoming projects will process 3150 metric tonnes of solid waste per day and fetch carbon credit and royalty by sale of energy and provide clean fuel.
Dr Sain also disclosed that MCD was trying to achieve Zero Waste Management Level by segregating so that minimal bio-degradable garbage reaches land fill sites, mandatory setting aside green areas for vermiculture and promoting waterless urinals.
Mr Deepak Pahwa, Chairman, Environment Committee, PHD Chamber said that World Environment Day was the right time to start addressing the issues by all in the right earnest. The 3 R’s –Reuse, Reduce and Recycle are important for Solid Waste Management, added Mr. Pahwa.
Mr. K G Ramanathan, President ICPE (Indian Centre for Plastics and Environment) urged the mayor to look at plastics as a viable alternative which has to be used judiciously and urged all to take care of the environment.
