PHD Chamber calls on Sheila Dikshit for Integrated Public Transportation System for Delhi

PHD Chamber has called upon Delhi’s Chief Minister, Smt Sheila Dikshit, to implement a proper integrated public transportation system and mechanised / underground parking facilities in the national capital to significantly ease the problems being faced by the local public of Delhi due to the exploding vehicular traffic. Completion of the Phase II of the Metro by next year would help tremendously but this needs to be accompanied by proper parking facilities at the Metro stations, feeder system of bus services, etc. There has been a rapid increase in vehicular traffic from 34 lakh vehicles in 2000-01 to 59 lakh in 2008-09 in Delhi.

“The number and frequency of the low-floor AC buses should be increased substantially. Rather than long routes, these buses should ply within a certain area and on shorter routes and can be dovetailed with the Delhi Metro system. These buses should ply across the Metro lines and not parallel to them and can act as feeder buses from different Metro stations to adjoining areas”, according to Mr. Rajeev Talwar, Chairman, Infrastructure Committee, PHD Chamber and Group Executive Director DLF Ltd.

Several designated parking spaces in New Delhi remain underutilised due to lack of feeder bus services from these facilities to adjoining areas. Parking facilities can be at a central point with attached feeder bus services which can be used by people who park their vehicles at these points and use the feeder bus services to visit adjoining areas. This will help in optimum utilisation of the parking facilities and also increase revenue.

“Low-floor AC buses should ply between all major residential areas in the NCR region and New Delhi to reduce the number of vehicles entering the city everyday.” said Mr. Ashish Wig, Co-Chairman, Infrastructure Committee, PHD Chamber.

In the medium term, the problem of traffic congestion in New Delhi can be overcome by elevated corridors and multi-level roads. These corridors and roads can be planned under PPP mode with toll tax
