Focus on farm sector reforms will stabilise inflation: PHD Chamber

The increase in WPI inflation from 5.2% in April 2014 to 6.01% in May 2014 is largely because of increase in prices of food articles including fruit, egg, meat & fish, oilseeds, said Mr. Sharad Jaipuria, President, PHD Chamber in a press statement issued here today.

The food inflation increased to 8.58% in May 2014 from 7.06% in April 2014. This was due to high inflation in fruit (19.4), potato (31.44), rice (12.75), egg, Meat & Fish (12.47).

Focus on farm sector especially the agri-supply chain infrastructure will prevent jump in prices of various commodities especially the food items which causes cascading impact on the overall WPI inflation scenario, said Mr. Jaipuria.

Rising inflation needs to be tackled at grass root level as there exists enough agricultural production to serve food demand in the economy but the delivery from the farm gate to consumer doorstep is problematic in terms of various hurdles in the supply chain management, said Mr. Jaipuria.
