Odd-even car formula inspiring; certain amendments needed: PHD Chamber

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomes the decision of the Delhi government and appreciates the odd-even formula of vehicles plying on Delhi roads, said Mr. Saurabh Sanyal, Secretary General, PHD Chamber in a press statement issued here today.

We believe that the rule for odd and even cars to be allowed on alternate days will reduce the pollution levels in the city drastically, said Mr. Sanyal.

However, PHD Chamber suggests that there should be certain amendments in the current rule to make it more people-friendly, he said.

Pollution is majorly because of traffic jams, he said. To reduce traffic jams, government should provide a chance to people to manage accordingly and time trajectory should be shifted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to 9a.m. to 5 p.m., added Mr. Sanyal.

For the success of this rule, the public transport system needs to be strengthened so as to ensure connectivity to far away areas and availability of means of transport at every point, he said.

Further, instead of only Sundays, all vehicles regardless of their car numbers should be allowed on both Saturdays and Sundays and other public holidays for convenience, he added.

Special arrangements should be made for women travellers, said the industry body

Also, senior citizens and disabled persons should be exempted from this mandate, said Mr. Sanyal.

Going ahead, the state government must also strengthen pollution checks for all vehicles. Further, lane driving should be encouraged by the government with strict penalties and fines for lane jumping for all vehicles in the coming times, said Mr. Saurabh Sanyal.

Ends.
